NAIT COMMUNITY PRINCIPLES
Aligning with NAIT s Guiding Principles, members of the NAIT community share a responsibility to conduct themselves in a manner that promotes a working and learning environment characterized by integrity, mutual respect, professionalism, individual safety, and social responsibility. Members are expected to behave in a manner that is consistent with the mission and vision of the Institute, to promote the image of the Institute, to value diversity, to acknowledge the dignity and safety of each individual, and to promote the well-being of all members of the community in their roles at NAIT.


Purpose
The purpose of this Statement of Values is to describe conduct that promotes the well-being of the NAIT community and to serve as a guideline for appropriate behavior.


Scope
This Statement of Values applies to the actions of staff and students while on NAIT s physical or virtual premises or when acting as off-campus representatives of NAIT.


Fair Treatment
- Staff and students will accept others, respecting race, religious beliefs, gender, physical disability, mental disability, marital status, age, place of origin, family status, socioeconomic status, sexual orientation, gender identity, and political beliefs.
- Staff and students will refrain from disseminating or causing to be disseminated malicious or defamatory material.


Safety
- Staff and students will engage in conduct that protects the health, safety, and well-being of others.
- Staff and students will promote a safe environment free of mental, emotional, physical, and/or sexual violence.
- Staff and students will observe all health and safety procedures outlined for classrooms, laboratories, field trips, and work practicums.
- Staff and students must present identification when requested by Institute staff or security.


Harmony
- Staff and students will model, encourage, and support speech and action that promote a positive and effective teaching and learning environment.
- Staff and students will engage in appropriate speech and action during NAIT or NAIT-related functions or while on NAIT premises.
- Staff and students should encourage their on-campus guests to engage in appropriate speech and action.
- Staff and students will refrain from inciting others to behave in an unprofessional or disruptive manner.
- Staff and students will resolve challenges and seek resolution in a respectful and professional manner following internal processes and protocols.


Respect for property
- Staff and students will respect Institute property and the property of others.
- Staff and students will respect hours of entry onto Institute premises.
- Staff and students will respect limits placed on entering Institute premises.
- Staff and students will abide by Institute s policies and guidelines regarding the use of Institute resources.


Other
- Criminal behavior is prohibited.
- Possession, consumption, or sale of alcohol on NAIT premises is permitted only at NAIT-sanctioned events or venues.
- Possession, consumption, manufacture, or sale of illegal drugs is prohibited.
- Possession or use of firearms, dangerous substances, or other weapons is prohibited.


General standards supporting our values statement
- Relationships: safeguards are in place to ensure that the Institute s interests are upheld.
- Confidentiality: information should remain confidential unless a contravention of the law or a danger to health or safety exists.
- Conflicts of interest: The right of individuals to be involved in activities as citizens must be kept separate and distinct from their role and responsibility within the Institute. This may include the avoidance of accepting gifts resulting in objectivity being compromised or outside remuneration interfering with the performance of duties at the Institute.
