About Tyndale

Tyndale is a trans-denominational, evangelical university college and seminary that prepares leaders for the ministry, marketplace and global mission of the church. Tyndale offers a variety of degree programs in a wide range of disciplines and fully accredited programs at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.

At Tyndale University College, students study towards the Bachelor of Arts (BA), Bachelor of Religious Education (BRE) degree, Bachelor of Education (B.Ed) or a Certificate in Christian Studies. The BA prepares graduates for dynamic careers, further studies in graduate or professional programs, and for life in general. The degree combines a strong liberal arts core, a focus on biblical and theological studies, and the opportunity to major in one of eight disciplines. The Bachelor of Arts degree offers majors in Business Administration, English, History, Human Services, Philosophy, Psychology and Religious Studies. The Bachelor of Religious Education degree has three ministry foci. It is a three-year, professional program designed to prepare graduates for ministry in local churches, para-church organizations or missions. BRE students may choose from General Ministries, Pastoral Ministry or Youth Ministry. The B.Ed prepares teacher candidates to become accredited teachers in Ontario by immersing them into the teaching profession through learning from experienced faculty, being exposed to a variety of classroom settings, and forming values required by the educational enterprise.

Tyndale Seminary offers three master's degrees in Theology, Divinity and Theological Studies as well as a graduate diploma in Christian Studies, Missions or Spiritual Formation. The Master of Divinity and Theological Studies are offered in both traditional and modular formats. The modular programs are designed for Christians in the marketplace and pastors who want to remain in full-time ministry while attending classes. Students are able to fit their academic schedule around their work, family, and church responsibilities. Tyndale now offers a Doctor of Ministry program, designed for persons in ministry who are seeking to further develop their capacities for effective leadership.

Currently, there are over 1,200 students and 9,000 alumni. Founded in 1894, Tyndale is strategically positioned in a quiet residential enclave in north Toronto with easy access to the downtown. Toronto is Canada's most diverse city, and this diversity is reflected at Tyndale. We have more than 30 different ethnic groups represented and over 40 different denominations.

Tyndale's History

Tyndale University College & Seminary continues the tradition of decades of service out of its merger with and expansion of Toronto Bible College, London College of Bible and Missions, Ontario Bible College, and Tyndale College.

Founded in 1894, Toronto Bible College was the third school of its kind to be established in North America and the first in Canada. Under the leadership of Dr. Elmore Harris, then minister of the historic Walmer Road Baptist Church, Toronto Bible College (TBC) came into being. London College of Bible and Missions (LCBM) began in 1935, led by Dr. J. Wilmot Mahood. After the merger of TBC and LCBM in 1968, it was renamed Ontario Bible College (OBC). In 1976, OBC moved to north Toronto and developed a graduate school, Tyndale Seminary (formerly Ontario Theological Seminary).

The name Tyndale College was adopted in 1998 as part of a renewed vision to build a world-class centre of Christian higher education and to honour William Tyndale, the early English reformer whose commitment to making the Scriptures available to all persons led him to undertake the first English translation of the Bible, at the cost of his own life.

On June 26, 2003 the Ontario Legislature passed a bill which authorized us to change our name to Tyndale University College & Seminary and to offer the Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Arts (Honours) degrees in the humanities, the social sciences, and business. In this new stage, Tyndale is continuing in this tradition as a place of scholarship and training for those who wish to be salt and light in the world.
