he object of The Danish Design School is to provide education within arts and
crafts, design, and related fields and to contribute to the dissemination of
knowledge about methods and results within the professional field. The purpose
of the design programme is to give the student technical knowledge, methodical
ability, and professional competency in the design profession's disciplines in
preparation for occupation as a designer, including as a craftsman and as a
creative leader.
On an artistic basis, the programme is to develop the
student's aptitude for aesthetics, innovative shaping, and problem-solving in an
alternation between various concrete approaches focusing on the materials, so
that the graduate will be qualified to solve concrete, theoretical, and abstract
design assignments alike. The programme spans 5 years, divided into a 3-year
basic programme and a 2-year advanced programme.
It is the object of The
Danish Design School to strengthen both general and specialist design research
in Denmark, in compliance with the multiannual agreement with the Ministry of
Culture concerning improved educational programmes, and the performance
contract's requirement that the design programme be raised towards university
level in accordance with the Bologna Declaration's 3+2 educational
structure.
MISSION, VISION AND STRATEGY
Pursuant to the
legislation concerning artistic higher education institutions under the Ministry
of Culture, cf. Consolidated Act no. 889 of 21 September 2000, the object of The
Danish Design School(DKDS) is to provide education within arts and crafts,
design, and related fields, and to contribute to the dissemination of knowledge
about methods and results within the profession. The purpose of the programme
is to give the student technical knowledge, methodical ability, and professional
competency in the design profession's disciplines in preparation for occupation
as a designer, including as a craftsman.
The programme is to develop the
student's aptitude for aesthetics, innovative shaping, and problem-solving in an
alternation between concrete approaches focusing on the materials and
theoretical approaches, so that the student is qualified to solve concrete,
theoretical and abstract design assignments alike.
Mission DKDS´
mission is to promote professional competencies and new knowledge in the fields
of design and arts and crafts in interaction with educational institutions, the
business sector, and other players in the field of design. This means that DKDS
must contribute to ensuring and furthering the profession, the international
position of Danish design, and the competitive power of Danish industry. As of
the beginning of the school year 2003, the design programme at DKDS is organised
into the Institute of Communication Design and the Institute of Product
Design.
Vision On the basis of a desire for renewal and the
multiannual agreement's objectives for the artistic educational programmes, it
is DKDS' vision to develop the School into a design university which by means of
a new design programme, research, and artistic work will become a recognised
player, both in Denmark and internationally, in the education of designers and
the development and utilisation of new knowledge for the design
profession.
Strategy In order to ensure a top-level design
education and a competitive profile that will meet the needs of the students and
the industry, DKDS must be developed into a design university with research and
an educational structure that follows the principles of the Bologna Declaration.
This must be effected in the course of the next 8-10 years by uniting the
School's artistic/craftsman traditions with the academic tradition. The
craftsman element must retain and refine the ability to provide shape and the
experimenting command of the materials, whilst the academic element must turn
the design programme into a methodology programme on a par with the programmes
provided by academies and universities. |
