The Glass and Ceramic School on Bornholm
The Glass and Ceramic School on Bornholm offers a three-year advanced education under the Ministry of Culture that qualifies artist craftsmen in the field of glass or ceramics.


Objective
The education shall provide students with a thorough knowledge of craft techniques and materials and qualify students to design and develop glass or ceramics to a high artistic standard.

Through personal identification with the craft´s specific materials, techniques and forms coupled with theoretical studies, the students shall acquire the technical, aesthetic and analytical qualifications that are essential for carrying out assignments in the field of glass or ceramics.


Subject matter
Through some of the subjects are unique to either the glass or ceramics line, There are also a number of common core subjects such as art, history, aesthetics,design and philosophy, as well as implemental subjects like drawing, coulour theory, marketing, economy and communication.

The education includes individual training in the workshop as well as vocational training. It is persued through a series of projects led by visiting instructors from Denmark and abroad.

At the end of the first year of study, a test will be hold to assess whether the student lives up to a predetermined level in all subjects and diciplines.

The education concludes with an examination to document the qualifications acquired by the student during the course of study. The examination will be assessed by an examiner from the School and by external examiners officially appointed by the ministry of Culture.The details of the education´s objectives, subjects, method of instruction, etc., are laid down in the School´s curriculum.

Applications must be submitted to the school no later than March 15 and shall include copies of diplomas, references, course cerficates and the like. Each applicant shall also enclose a personal statement describing interests, reasons for applying, expectations as to the education, as well as plans for the future. Furthermore, examples of free-hand drawings and photographs of personal products should be submitted to the school no later than June 14, if you are invited to the final admission examination.

On the basis of the material submitted, the School nominates qualified candidates for a final admission examination.


Admission Requirements
Applicants must have completed no less than three years of practical or theoretical training after secondary school. Applicants should be skilled at expressing themselves orally, visually and in writing. They must be proficient in languages, as a minimum skill in English corresponding to second year of upper secondary school.

The school accepts Danish applicants and non-Danish applicants with Danish study qualifications. The technical and/or theoretical requirements can be fulfilled as follows.:

1. Complete or partial vocational training program in a relevant area.

2. Employment or workshop training in the glass or ceramics sector.

3. Other relevant training

4. Combinations of the above. Upper secondary education or equivalent preparatory education may qualify as part of the theoretical requirements.

In evaluating the qualifications of the applicants, the following will have high priority.:

- employment experience in the glass or ceramics sector, or related fields.

- International orientation, i.e. a personal history of study trips abroad.

- Personal artistic/creative experience.


Admission examination
Admission examinations are set within the field of either glass or ceramics. Admission examinations are held every year at the end of June. In addition to practical assignments, the admission examination consist of a personal interview with the applicant. The overall assessment af each applicant´s suitability for admission is based on the admission examination, the personal interview and the submitted material. If the number of qualified applicants is greater than the number of spaces available at the school, then the school admits students in order of best test results. The school admits a maximum of twelve students each year to the glass and ceramics lines respectively.


Economy
Danish students admitted to the school are eligible for student aid from the state Education Fund (SU). Expenses for materials, study trips and excursions amount to an average of DDK 8.000,00 per year.


Facts about the school
The school has an ideal layout with large bright workshop facilities filled with state-of-the-art equipment in all of the working areas, including a workshop for woodwork and metalwork. The school also contains a large room for drawing, various classrooms and a library with electronicequipment that enables direct information retrieval from around the world. The school´s computer room has 3-D programmes for the electronic processing of concepts and sketches before realising them in the workshop.

The school is next door to The Centre for Regional and Tourism Research and is scenically located at the edge of Nexø with a view of the Baltic Sea and Quarry Lake.

Geography
Bornholm is 145 kilometres south east of Copenhagen in a straight (180 kilometres by sea), 40 kilometres south of Sweden and 90 kilometres north of Germany and Poland respectively.


Population & size
Bornholm has a population of about 45.000. The island covers 587 km2 and contains unique landscapes, which include almost every variety of nature found in northern Europe.


Art & Craft
Hardly any other place in Europe has as many craftworkers per capita as on Bornholm. The Bornholm community abounds with ceramists glassblowers, weavers, paper cutters, sculptors, cabinetmakers and metal smiths.

Artist and craftspeople have been drawn to and inspired by the unique Bornholm landscapes for the past two hundreds years. To display this rich artistic heritage, the Art Museum of Bornholm - an architectural masterpiece in itself - was built at Helligdomsklipperne on North Bornholm.

Bornholm´s rich tradition in applied art, and ceramics in particular, are evident by the more than 50 independent potteries on the island. In addition, many glassblowing workshops have been established on the island within the last twenty years along the island´s north and east cost.

Activities include a variety of sports at many clubs, rowing, sailing and surfing opportunities, angling, action tours, bowling, trotting, tennis, golf and horseback riding. In summer the towns and villages come alive with exotic vibrancy, while Bornholm´s beautiful nature offers many peaceful secluded havens. Thriving clubs and religious activities.
