Ilia State University's mission is based on the rationale that knowledge economy
can only be developed at a strong research university nurturing well-educated
group of individuals, who possess critical, analytical and creative skills.
Thus, the contribution of a research university in the state's development and
growth primarily relies on creation of opportunities for knowledge economy, as
opposed to developing the specific fields of economy.
The main obstacle
to creation and development of knowledge economy in Georgia is the absence of
research on Georgia. Georgia's potential has largely been neglected by the
scholarly literature that has emerged and expanded at the turn of the century.
This equally applies to modern earth sciences, ecology and biodiversity, but
also to the fields of humanities and social sciences, only beginning to make its
first steps in Georgia.
Ilia State University supports and develops
research on fundamental problems of sciences. Achieving and maintaining
competitiveness in fundamental sciences is extremely important for successful
university teaching, as well as for preparing the solid basis for young
scientists. Based on the research conducted within the scopes of fundamental
sciences, Ilia State University directs the study of Georgia in all related
directions. This way, the University emerges as an initiator of international
studies and is an active participant of international programs in this domain.
All that places research conducted in Georgia in an international scientific
context and helps Ilia State University maintain the internationally
acknowledged level in the field of fundamental sciences.
In its
activities, Ilia State University follows the model of a research triangle. This
justifies the existence of three interdisciplinary directions at the
University:
1. Georgian studies;
2. Research of fundamental problems
of sciences;
3. Participation in international research.
Development
stemming from this mission is the only way to enable Ilia State University to
become a full-scale member of a world-wide educational and research community. |
